Step into one of Nepal’s most fascinating journeys. The Upper Mustang Trek takes you into the heart of the once‑forbidden kingdom of Mustang, a land of wind-shaped canyons, ancient forts and a culture that feels untouched by time. This trek blends dramatic landscapes with deep history and spiritual richness for an unforgettable adventure.

Why Go on the Upper Mustang Trek

This trek is unlike any other in Nepal. It leads through an arid rain‑shadow region of the Annapurna range where the scenery shifts from lush valleys to stark desert‑like hills. The terrain is framed by towering peaks like Nilgiri, Annapurna and Dhaulagiri, and dotted with villages that cling to centuries‑old traditions.

You’ll walk ancient trails that were once vital trade routes between Nepal and Tibet. Along the way you’ll discover:

  • A rich Tibetan Buddhist culture and deep religious traditions.
  • Serene villages like Kagbeni, Chele, Syangboche, Tsarang and the walled city of Lo Manthang.
  • Chozer/Chhoser Sky Caves, mysterious ancient chambers carved high into cliff faces.
  • Ancient monasteries and gompas that date back hundreds of years.
  • Stunning views of high Himalayan peaks from remote vantage points.

This trek feels like stepping back in time, into a place strong with tradition and welcomed by vast open spaces.

Trek Highlights

  • Fly into Jomsom and begin your journey from the banks of the Kali Gandaki River.
  • Explore Lo Manthang, the ancient capital of the Mustang kingdom.
  • Wander through centuries‑old cave complexes perched above river valleys.
  • Visit sacred sites like Muktinath Temple, revered by both Hindus and Buddhists.
  • Experience traditional lifestyles and hospitality in small high‑altitude villages.

Best Time to Go

The trek is enjoyable almost year‑round thanks to Mustang’s dry climate. Most trekkers prefer:

  • Spring (March to May) for blooming wildflowers and soft light.
  • Autumn (September to November) for crisp skies and the best mountain views.

It’s also possible to trek in the monsoon because Upper Mustang is in a rain shadow, though summer trails can be dusty and hot. Winter brings snow and cold and many teahouses close.

Difficulty & Preparation

The Upper Mustang Trek is considered moderate. Trails are long but steady, and the highest points stay below 4,200 meters. A good level of fitness and acclimatization helps you enjoy the trek fully.

You’ll spend days walking between villages and plateaus, usually 5 to 7 hours of trekking per day. Accommodations are in local teahouses and guesthouses that offer a warm rest after a day on the trail.

Permit & Travel Requirements

Upper Mustang is a restricted area of Nepal and you’ll need the appropriate permits and a licensed guide or group to enter. This ensures both your safety and the preservation of local culture and landscape.

Day 3

Fly to Jomsom & Trek to Kagbeni (2,856 m) – 4–5 Hours Walk
