Shey Phoksundo Lake, the deepest lake in Nepal, is a sacred and breathtaking natural wonder. Revered by the locals of Dolpa, the lake is renowned for its striking aquamarine hue and crystal-clear waters, which remain untouched by aquatic life. Often described by seasoned travelers as the “Jewel of Dolpo,” Shey Phoksundo Lake offers a truly refreshing and serene experience, surrounded by towering snow-capped mountains that enhance its beauty.

Situated within Shey-Phoksundo National Park in the mountainous region of western Nepal, the lake lies across parts of Dolpa and Mugu districts. Established in 1984, the park covers an area of 3,555 square kilometers, making it the largest national park in the country. Its primary objective is to preserve the unique Himalayan ecosystem characterized by Tibetan-type flora and fauna, as well as to protect endangered species such as the snow leopard and musk deer.

Dolpo, a remote and culturally rich region in mid-western Nepal, shares deep historical and cultural ties with Tibet. The area remained restricted to trekkers until 1990, which has helped preserve its pristine natural and cultural heritage. Visitors to Dolpo can enjoy the stunning views of Phoksundo Lake while immersing themselves in the fascinating culture of Ringmo Village, where Nepalese and Tibetan traditions blend harmoniously.

The Dhaulagiri range blocks the monsoon in this region, allowing trekking during the summer season. As a sacred lake with deep Buddhist significance, swimming and bathing in Shey Phoksundo are strictly prohibited. The absence of aquatic life keeps its waters exceptionally pure, with only a few migratory birds occasionally gracing its surface.
